Brooks of Babylon

By the banks of the brooks of Babylon
We hung our harps and wept.
In the Euphrates we remembered the Jordan
And the Nile which ran with blood.
River of life, you awaken us to our death.
From you flowed freedom. Once fount of joy,
Now sign of sorrow, symbol of slavery,
Now emblem of our exile.
